As a species, mermaids are often portrayed as beautiful women with long hair living in an underwater kingdom where they sing and dance with Sailors to lure them off their ships and into the water.

Another frequent theme is that of captured or bewitched humans falling in love with Mermaids when sighted on land, but never being able to consummate the relationship due to their inability to live out of water.

Mermaids have been a part of human imagination for thousands of years. From the ancient Babylonians and Assyrians to the Greeks and Romans, Mermaids were said to live in bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, seas, and oceans.

The first depiction of a mermaid was found by Archaeologists on an ancient Sumerian cuneiform tablet that dates back as far as the 3rd millennium BC. The tablet depicts a fish-tailed god who is holding onto his rod with one hand and playing the flute while riding on top of a giant bull known as Triton.

3) Sirens–Another kind of mermaid is the siren from Greek Mythology who lured sailors with her voice to shipwrecks on rocks. Sirens can inspire adventure but can also lure people into danger if their curiosity gets the better of them.

What Do Mermaids Look Like?

Mermaids are half-human, half-fish. Their upper body is that of a beautiful woman's, but below the waist is a long tail with horizontal flukes and vertical fins.

A mermaid's skin is scaled like a fish's, but more beautiful. Her scales are iridescent and shimmer with all the colors of the ocean when they move in the water. A mermaid’s hair is similar to seaweed in color and texture, sometimes dark green or black, sometimes light brown or golden.

What Do They Eat?

A lot of people think they eat fish, but it turns out they don’t. They are carnivores, and their diet includes squid, octopus, shrimp-like animals called amphipods, and even small sharks (the reason why you should never swim with a mermaid).

Mermaids can also feed on plankton and various organic detritus found in oceanic waters. They have some big mouths to fit all that food inside! Their jaws are not fused together like ours.

Where Do They Live?

Mermaids live in the Ocean. They can be found in most oceans and seas, such as the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.

Personality Traits!

Mermaids are not social by nature. They don’t like mingling with others; instead, they live in solitude and do not want to be disturbed at all. They only come out of water when needed and return back to their secret realm.

They're beautiful and they can be very seductive sometimes violent too but these creatures usually aren't evil; in many myths, they protect Sailors from storms at sea or from shipwrecks.

In ancient times people believed that mermaids could foretell the future or even become a guide to lead them to treasure on ocean beds.
